Are you interested in working with local communities and delivering a community archaeology programme in England's largest National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site? We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team to lead our ‘Stepping into History’ project, funded through the Landscape Enhancement Initiative, part of National Grid’s Visual Impact Provision project.
You will engage the local community, recruit a team of volunteers and train and support them to carry out a range of desk and field-based activities including archival research, dry stone wall condition surveys, walkover survey, geophysics, level 2 survey, test-pitting and excavation. You will play an important part helping us to restore and enhance traditional features, contributing to our spectacular landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

The role
Your main duties and responsibilities will be:
• Actively engage our communities to understand their needs and work collaboratively with other staff
• To negotiate, organise and manage the delivery of defined environmental, recreation, cultural heritage, archaeological and transport management projects and initiatives that realise multiple public benefits
• Provide advice, guidance and support to landowners and land managers in ways that deliver enhanced and sustainable environmental management
• Supervise, coordinate, and practically implement areas of work and specific activities with volunteers, contractors and fellow staff (including apprentices) to achieve our objectives and support our partners.
About you
You will have a good degree in archaeology or a related subject, or equivalent relevant expertise. You will be able to develop and implement community archaeology projects and have expertise in field archaeology to at least senior supervisor level. You will have good team-working, communication and interpersonal skills, a disciplined approach to work, good time-management skills and the ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines. The project may involve weekend and some evening work.
